One of the biggest reasons homeowners switch to composite is the freedom from endless maintenance. Unlike timber, composite decking, cladding and fencing never need sanding, staining, oiling or painting. But a little routine care keeps them looking their best for years. Here’s how.

Routine cleaning

For most dirt, a sweep and a wash is all you need. Clear leaves and debris, then rinse with warm soapy water and a soft brush. For larger areas, a pressure washer on a low setting (kept moving and at a sensible distance) works well. Rinse off any residue afterwards.

Stubborn spots & stains

  • Food, drink & grease: wipe up quickly and clean with warm soapy water; a little washing-up liquid lifts most grease.
  • Oil marks: treat with a household degreaser and rinse thoroughly.
  • Scuffs: a soft brush and warm water usually does the job.

Mould & mildew

In damp, shaded spots a thin surface film of mould can appear — it’s not a fault and cleans off easily. Use a dedicated composite or patio cleaner, scrub gently along the grain, and rinse well. Keeping the surface clear of leaves and standing water helps prevent it returning.

Water marks & weathering

Traditional (uncapped) boards lighten slightly in the first few months as they react to UV, then settle — this is normal. Capped ranges resist this. Occasional water marks fade with normal weathering and cleaning.

Ice & snow

Clear snow with a plastic (not metal) shovel, and use rock salt or sand for grip rather than harsh de-icers.

A little care goes a long way
